Conversations with the Earth: Becoming an Artist
"See & Draw" Art Workshop Series 10 Tokyo University of the Arts (Ueno) / University Art Museum A curious plant—from the leaf to the stem. Today I'm an artist. My sky—what kind of sky is it? Against a sky like a white canvas, my own colors show clearly. My sky-color—here, take it, if you like. Far away, it feels like you could see right through it. In the drawing, the person themselves comes into view. I wonder what everyone felt. The swallowtail we met by the roadside, we laid it gently to rest on a leaf. Let's go and meet the artists' works. From here, it's my turn. All right—time to draw. Layered leaves, the light passing through—how beautiful. Some listen to how it's going, some watch, some quietly look on. Once you'd made your mark, you played. What did you see, feel, think about? What is an artist, to you? You looked at this world, felt it, thought about it well— and your own way of expressing it, everyone was shining. An artist, maybe, is someone who wants to talk with this planet.
